چکیده

The advent of gas lasers has caused considerable interest in energy-transfer mechanisms that would create or degrade a population inversion. In molecular gases, rotational energy transfer (RET) is by far the most probable collision process, being typically 1-2 orders of magnitude more likely than vibrational transfer and 2-3 orders of magnitude more likely than electronic energy transfer. We have measured nearly 500 thermally averaged rate constants, with typical experimental errors of 6-10%, for the process

22.1.1 Rydber Atoms in a Magnetic Field We have produced Rydberg atoms in a lithium atomic beam using cw dye lasers, and developed the technology for detecting these atoms with electric field ionization. These advances have brought us close to the point where we can start carrying out high resolution measurements on highly excited atoms in a strong magnetic field by cw laser spectroscopy. photo...

As a natural development of our scattering and maser experiments, we have initiated work on the interactions of atoms in excited states. Many new and interesting experiments appear now to be feasible, because of recent developments in atomic beams and lasers. We describe in the present report plans for one such experiment: measurement of the energy dependence of an alkali fine-structure transfe...

Our group is concerned with atomic structure and with interactions between atoms. Experiments are in progress to determine the magnetic moments of the proton and deuteron to high precision, and to obtain absolute values of nuclear shielding constants in some simple molecules. The experiments are carried out with a hydrogen maser and an associated magnet of unusually high homogeneity and stabili...

The Atomic Physics Group is concerned with problems of atomic structure and the interaction of atoms with static and dynamic fields. The experiments generally employ highly excited Rydberg atoms, and utilize techniques of laser excitation with detection by ionization in an applied electric field. (A recent article by members of the group in Scientific American1 provides a general introduction t...

1. Optical Frequency Standard Joint Services Electronics Program (Contract DAAB07-74-C-0630) David E. Pritchard We are trying to develop a simple and economical "frequency meter" to be used with a tunable laser to preset the laser frequency, measure the laser frequency, or provide frequency marker pulses when the laser frequency is swept. A prototype system capable of 50 MHz accuracy is nearing...
